Mondrian used straight lines to make squares and rectangles. We learned that Vertical lines stand UP and DOWN, and Horizontal lines lay sided to side. We also learned that Mondrian would sometimes spend hours just staring at his paintings! He wanted to make sure his painting looked "just right." After kindergarteners made their black horizontle and vertical lines they took sometime to plan exactly where they wanted to paint each Primary color.
To remember the primary colors we learned part of a poem: Primary, Primary, RED, YELLOW, BLUE; Every single color is made from one of you!
